What is a primary battery?
A primary battery is a non-rechargeable battery that is designed for single use. Once the chemicals inside the battery are exhausted, it can no longer produce electrical energy and must be replaced.
These batteries are commonly used in devices that consume very little power or are used only occasionally.
Some common examples include:
- TV remote controls
- Wall clocks
- Flashlights
- Toys
- Smoke detectors
Since they are not rechargeable, primary batteries are often referred to as single-use batteries.
Types of primary batteries
There are several types of primary batteries, each designed for different applications.
Zinc-carbon batteries
Zinc-carbon batteries are among the oldest and most economical battery types. They are commonly used in low-power devices such as flashlights, radios, and simple electronics projects.
Some low-cost 9 V batteries are made using six zinc-carbon cells connected in series, although 9 V batteries are also available in alkaline and other chemistries.
Alkaline batteries
Alkaline batteries are one of the most commonly used primary batteries today. Compared to zinc-carbon batteries, they provide higher capacity, longer shelf life, and better performance under load.
This is why alkaline batteries are widely used in devices such as remote controls, wireless keyboards, toys, and portable electronic equipment.
Coin cells (Button cells)
Coin cells are small, flat batteries commonly used in compact electronic devices. Depending on the application, they may use lithium, silver oxide, or alkaline chemistry.
They are commonly found in:
- Wrist watches
- Calculators
- Car key fobs
- Motherboard CMOS memory
- Small medical devices
Why can’t primary batteries be recharged?
As a primary battery supplies electrical energy, chemical reactions inside the battery gradually consume the active materials. Unlike rechargeable batteries, these chemical reactions cannot be efficiently reversed by applying an external charging current.
Once the chemicals are depleted, the battery reaches the end of its useful life and must be replaced.
What is a secondary battery?
A secondary battery is a rechargeable battery. Unlike primary batteries, the chemical reactions inside a secondary battery can be reversed by supplying electrical energy from an external charger.
This restores the battery’s chemical energy, allowing it to be used again.
Although rechargeable batteries eventually wear out, they can usually be recharged hundreds or even thousands of times, depending on the battery chemistry and usage conditions.
Examples of secondary batteries
Rechargeable batteries are used in devices that require frequent charging or consume relatively large amounts of power.
Some common examples include:
- Smartphones
- Laptops
- Electric vehicles
- Power banks
- Cordless drills
- Cameras

- Lithium-ion (Li-ion)

- Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH)

Which battery should you choose?
Primary batteries are a good choice for devices that consume very little power or are used infrequently because they have a long shelf life and require no charging.
Rechargeable batteries are a better option for devices that are used regularly. Although they cost more initially, they can be recharged many times, making them more economical and reducing battery waste over time.
